UKIP gained its first elected MP in October 2014 when Douglas Carswell won the Clacton by-election. Carswell, who had defected from the Conservatives, achieved a record increase in the share of the vote for a party in a by-election by winning 60% of the votes. Conservative MP Mark Reckless also defected to UKIP and won the Rochester and Strood by-election.
