Comments such as the following are overheard far too often as students leave examinations: ‘The paper was really unfair’; ‘Nothing I had revised came up’; ‘I ran out of time’. Many students do not achieve the result that their ability merits. Under the new system, where students may have only one attempt at each unit, it will be even more important to get it right on the day. Most mistakes are avoidable. This article is designed to help you to avoid being disappointed on results day.

All exam boards are prescriptive about what they want to see from students. An essential starting point, therefore, is to become familiar with the requirements of your examination (Table 1 and Box 1). If you are taking A2, be clear on the synoptic requirements, which vary between boards.
