Edward Ashbee looks at the fate of second-term presidents

A president’s second term rarely, if ever, goes well. President George W. Bush had to abandon his pledge to reform the pension system. His foreign policy agenda was dragged down by difficulties in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Others have fared little better. Despite some foreign policy successes, Bill Clinton’s domestic policy plans shuddered to a halt and he spent much of his time fighting an impeachment battle. President Reagan faced fallout from the Iran-Contra scandal.
