At 11.18 p.m. (Eastern Standard Time) on Tuesday 6 November, 2012, CNN declared President Barack Obama as the winner of that day’s presidential election. He thereby became the twenty-second president — out of 31 — to run for re-election and win. Being re-elected to a second term is pretty much a prerequisite for being deemed a successful president. Not that all such presidents are necessarily regarded as ‘successful’ — think Richard Nixon in 1968 and 1972 — but all one-term presidents are generally consigned to the list of ‘failures’ — think Jimmy Carter and George H. W. Bush.
