Ian Richards assesses the coalition government’s January 2013 mid-term review

In an attempt to review, re-conceive and re-launch the coalition government David Cameron and Nick Clegg announced their mid-term review in early January 2013.

When the coalition was formed in May 2010 there was much talk of a ‘rose garden’ romance. This followed the first joint press conference by Nick Clegg and David Cameron which was famously held in the garden of No. 10 Downing Street. The sense at that stage was that the party leaders were kindred spirits bonded by a political marriage. Within days there was talk of a realignment of UK party politics.
