Not so long ago, it was quite easy to dissect the divisions inside Britain’s major political parties. Back in the mid-1990s, for example, there were fairly clear splits between ‘New’ and ‘Old’ Labour on the one hand, and ‘eurosceptic’ and ‘europhile’ Conservatives on the other. Since 2010, however, the situation has become more oblique.
Inside the Labour Party, there has been general agreement since 2010 that New Labour should give way to ‘Next Labour’. But there has been less agreement about what this might involve. Indeed, no fewer than five different tendencies emerged within Labour after 2010, each seeking to influence the party’s new leadership.
