In August 2012, Mitt Romney selected Congressman Paul Ryan of Wisconsin as the Republicans’ vice-presidential candidate or running mate.
Many commentators have pointed to the political risks that the selection of Ryan brought with it. More than any other member of Congress, Ryan, who is Chairman of the House of Representatives Budget Committee, is identified with calls for the radical cutting and restructuring of the federal government budget. His alternatives to President Obama’s proposed budgets are often referred to as ‘the Ryan plan’.
