Rick Perry no doubt lost a lot of sleep reliving the moment that effectively ended his 2012 presidential run: his ‘oops’ moment in the Republican debate where he failed to recall the name of the third government department which he intended to abolish. However, he can take some comfort from the fact that he was not the first, and no doubt will not be the last, politician to suffer from an excruciatingly embarrassing, or career ending, ‘oops moment’.

Former US president, Ronald Reagan, said in a sound check for a radio interview: ‘My fellow Americans, I’m pleased to tell you today that I’ve signed legislation to outlaw Russia forever. We begin bombing in five minutes.’
