An effective check on coalition government?

Parliament performs many important functions in the political system, and one of these is to scrutinise government and hold it to account. In the UK, government is remarkably powerful. It is therefore crucial that Parliament provides an effective check on the executive and challenges its policies and actions. However, the power and capabilities of government are widely acknowledged as routinely outstripping those of Parliament, which has consequences for the processes of scrutiny and accountability. This does not mean that Parliament is powerless, only that we must carefully analyse the ways in which Parliament does constrain government.
