Togain an A* at A-level, you need both to gain an A overall (320 out of 400 UMS) and to score 90% overall (180 out of 200 UMS) in the A2 units. This may sound like a dauntingly high level of achievement, and only about 10% of any given entry are awarded A*s, but there is no magic quality that A* essays possess — they simply do all the things that any essay needs to do but just a bit better. This article explains how you can reach that standard and the key skills you need to work on, so that with hard work and a bit of luck you can be one of that 10%.
Essays are given four marks for the different assessment objectives: one for AO1, two for AO2 and one for AO3. To reach A* standard you will need to score highly for all of them.
