The 1st Amendment to the US Constitution asserts that: ‘Congress shall make no law…abridging freedom of speech or of the Press.’ This shows that the framers of the Constitution recognised the important role that a free press plays as a guardian of US democracy.
An integral part of a functioning democracy is that people are able to make informed choices and decisions. However, in spite of a politically free media it is debatable whether US citizens are exposed to the fair and balanced reporting that would enable them to make a reasoned choice at the time of elections.
