In any democracy freedom of the media is an important issue since it is through the media that citizens can learn about the world they live in and hence make informed choices about how and by whom they should be governed. It is widely accepted that the British media are free in the sense that they are independent of government control. More controversial is the extent to which they are independent of corporate influence. The media serve democracy in three ways:
