The 2010 general election saw one of the largest shake-ups of the House of Commons for more than a generation. More than one-third of the newly elected MPs were new to the House. However, this new intake did not lead to a radical-looking House of Commons. Indeed, on some criteria, the current crop of MPs appears to be more elitist than many of those that have gone before.
It is perhaps not surprising — possibly even pleasing — that the overwhelming majority (approximately 90%) of MPs went to university, with one in four having attended either Oxford or Cambridge. Among Conservative MPs almost one in three were Oxbridge educated.
