What is the key to success in Topic B, Political Ideologies? How can you maximise your examination performance? Many of you think that simple hard work and an appetite for absorbing huge quantities of information are enough. You go into the exam with your head swirling with knowledge (ideas, doctrines and theories of all kinds), but, in fact, have little idea how to deploy that knowledge effectively in the examination. Your resulting answers often appear to be either rote-learned versions of homework essays or mock exam answers (‘My best ever essay. I’ll save it up and use it in the exam!’), or an exercise in saturation bombing, in which everything you know is thrown at the answer (‘I learnt it, therefore I’ll use it!’).
Sadly, neither approach is a recipe for success. Instead, you need to be aware of what you get marks for, and how these marks can be acquired.
