Humans have a natural curiosity, and are always asking ‘how’ or ‘why’ things happen. Sometimes they use imagination to make up explanations – stories and legends – and sometimes they find reassurance in their faith or belief, but other times they will use a scientific method.

When you use a scientific approach you make many observations and then come up with a possible explanation – this is called a hypothesis. Many people, and scientists in their everyday lives, will say, ‘I have a theory’.
