Can the skills and knowledge learned in physics help to protect us from floods, droughts and the dangers of disease from contaminated water?

Over the course of a year in the UK we usually see a number of flooding incidents, and in some years there are droughts and hosepipe bans. Without flood protection schemes, reservoirs and water-treatment plants these incidents would be a lot more frequent and severe.

This NASA International Disaster Charter Activation site lists cases where data that are acquired from space stations and satellites have been used to assist areas affected by disasters. You can see that many of them, all around the world, are floods:
