When a rocket burns fuel, its mass changes. Newton’s second law tells us how force is related to the rate of change of momentum. The principle of the conservation of momentum, applied to the system of the rocket and its fuel, allows scientists to calculate the changing velocity of a rocket, and to design rockets that will take us into Earth’s orbit and beyond.
