EXAM TALKBACK

Motors versus generators

Some exam questions ask you to apply your extended writing skills in answer to a longer, unscaffolded question. Hovan Catchatoor and Nicky Robinson examine how you can successfully approach this type of question

Unstructured questions test your critical thinking skills, especially your ability to organise ideas so that they are linked logically with fully sustained reasoning. At first that may seem a daunting task, and you may not know where to start. The key, however, is to use the clues in the question to create a clear structure for your answer before you do anything else. Knowing the definitions of the command words can help you enormously with this.

The question discussed in this ‘Exam talkback ’ is asking you to discuss how a particular device can be used both as a motor and a generator. The question is taken from the October 2020 Edexcel Advanced Physics Paper 1, which covers electrical and mechanical principles in physics. The question is reproduced by kind permission of Pearson Education Ltd (Edexcel). The answers that follow are the responsibility of Physics Review, and Edexcel accepts no responsibility whatsoever for their accuracy or method of working.
