Particle physicists use particle accelerators to study the properties of elementary particles. The first ‘particle accelerator’ was invented by Galileo to study the acceleration of objects subject to the force of gravity. By using an inclined plane, and working with the components of the force, he was able to ‘dilute’ the force of gravity. He used ideas about the period of a simple pendulum to investigate free fall.
