The power behind the bike

How much power does a cyclist generate? And how is their power measured?

The terms in bold link to topics in the AQA, Edexcel, OCR, WJEC and CCEA A-level specifications, as well as the IB, Pre-U and SQA exam specifications.

The power generated by a cyclist is related to the work done as they pedal, which depends on the force they exert and on the angular velocity of the pedals. A cycle power meter uses a strain gauge to measure force.
