The sound of starlight

How can a star’s natural oscillations reveal information about its interior?

The terms in bold link to topics in the AQA, Edexcel, OCR, WJEC and CCEA A-level specifications, as well as the IB, Pre-U and SQA exam specifications.

The density, temperature and pressure inside a star, deduced using the gas laws, and knowledge of sound waves can be used to analyse the seismic oscillations that cause small variations in the star’s brightness.
