EXAM TALKBACK

Determining resistivity

Some A-level questions require an answer involving extended writing, while others require evaluation. This question on electrical resistivity requires both in separate question parts

The determination of the resistivity of the material of a wire is included in all the A-level specifications and in a specified practical in all but one. Students are therefore expected to be familiar with it.

Part (a) is a QER (quality of extended response) question, which is assessed on presentation as well as its content. This question has a slight twist in that, instead of just writing out a standard experimental procedure, the student has to improve on the stated one, so that it has aspects of assessment objective 3 (AO3) as well as AO1 (Box 1). It is, however, a straightforward question, so the examiners will expect full answers, with many details required for high marks.
