These notes discuss the structure, motion, pressure and temperature of Earth’s atmosphere

The letters in the red squares are E, U, J, O and L: JOULE. The letters in the green squares are R, E, I, C, and U: CURIE. The letters in the blue squares are A, F, A, D and R: FARAD.

These notes examine some of the physical properties and processes at work in Earth’s atmosphere (1 Across). To set the scene, Figure 1 shows the terms used for the different regions of the atmosphere — note that it is not drawn to scale. The labels show approximate density, D — expressed as a multiple of the density of air close to Earth’s surface — and temperature.
