Steven Chu was born in 1948 in Missouri, USA, the middle of three brothers. Although working hard and doing well, he found school a chore and had many other interests, including sport — teaching himself to pole vault using bamboo poles from a carpet store — and building models.
In his final school year Chu was inspired by his physics teacher and went on to study physics and mathematics at the University of Rochester (New York), before moving to the University of California, Berkeley, for his PhD.
