Quantum computing uses the area of physics known as quantum mechanics. Carol Tear looks at some of these quantum ideas

Quantum computing is an active research area at the frontier of physics. As the world’s supercomputers reach the design limits of what is possible, companies such as Google and IBM, and universities, are working on the next generation of computers.

Classical computers solve problems by trying each solution in turn. Although supercomputers are very fast, some problems would take an impractical time (maybe a billion years) to solve. A quantum computer is so much faster that solving some of these problems will become possible. Business consultant Bernard Marr lists 15 facts everyone should know about quantum computing:
