CROSSWORD

Marine matters, metals and measurement

These notes focus on waves (refraction and phase), water droplets and some physical properties of metals, followed by a short note on a measurement unit

A large body of water has water vapour above its surface. Cool it sufficiently and the air soon reaches saturation (33 Down) and droplets of water form to create sea mist (33 Across) or fog.

Figure 1 is an outline map of the Big Island of the Hawaiian group of islands. The Pacific is a vast ocean and weather patterns (11 Across) will produce waves going in many directions. They will have various amplitudes and frequencies (and hence wavelengths), and the island will be buffeted by waves from all sides. Before discussing their action, let us consider waves in more detail.
