The race to the Moon

50 years on

The lunar module Eagle landed on the Moon 50 years ago, on 20 July 1969. No-one has been to the Moon since Apollo 17 in 1972. Why was there such a huge effort to get there in the first place?

This short article from NASA — ‘One giant leap for mankind’ — summarises the Apollo 11 mission in 1969 and includes footage of Neil Armstrong stepping onto the Moon for the first time:
