The new Elizabethan age

The current Elizabethan age, marked by the reign of Queen Elizabeth II, which began in 1952, has (as of 2015) lasted longer than the Victorian age (1837–1901). All over the country you can see examples of amazing Victorian engineering, but there are many from our Elizabethan age too

During Queen Victoria’s reign the railways grew from less than 3000 miles to more than 18 000 miles. Embankments, tunnels, viaducts and bridges transformed the landscape. In Queen Elizabeth’s reign the first motorway — the M1 — opened in 1959:
