exam talkback

Radioactive decay and nuclear radiation

Some A-level questions require students to answer in extended prose, as in this question on nuclear decay

The current specifications for all A-level exams contain QER (quality of extended response) questions, which assess the way in which you can communicate a physics idea. This question was not actually a QER question because it was taken from the previous specification, but part a illustrates the type of question now used to assess QER. Box 1 gives more information on the marking of QER questions.

This question is from the June 2017 WJEC PH5 resit paper for the legacy specification and is reproduced by permission of WJEC/Eduqas. The answers that follow are the responsibility of PHYSICS REVIEW, and WJEC/Eduqas accepts no responsibility whatsoever for their accuracy or the methods of working used.
