The mechanical properties of matter

The A-level specifications require students to tackle questions that have a significant mathematical demand. This question involves deriving and using an algebraic expression in the context of a ‘core practical’ to determine the Young modulus of a material

Material properties has been an optional topic on several A-level specifications. It is now in the AS section of all the A-level physics specifications in England and Wales.

The question discussed in this Exam talkback is from the June 2013 WJEC PH5 paper. It starts by looking at the specified practical work on determining the Young modulus of a material in the form of a wire, before an algebraic section on a composite wire. In view of the increased mathematical demand of the new specifications, this kind of analysis could appear on either the AS or A-level papers.
