exam talkback

Simple harmonic motion

Some questions test many skills at once — your ability to present a well-structured discussion, to calculate and to draw accurately, as well as to make links across the whole A-level specification. This Exam talkback discusses a question of this kind and explores the different forms of communication that its answer requires

The question in this Exam talkback is synoptic in style and incorporates ideas about electromagnetism, forces and simple harmonic motion. At first sight the question might appear quite daunting because the context, a loudspeaker, is one you may not be familiar with. Don’t be put off, as questions are carefully worded and give clues as to what the examiners are after. As with all long-answer questions, read the whole question first, so that you don’t go off at a tangent.

The question is taken from the June 2015 Edexcel Physics Unit 5 paper: Physics from Creation to Collapse, which covers thermal energy, nuclear decay, oscillations, astrophysics and cosmolog y. The question is reproduced by kind permission of Pearson Education Ltd (Edexcel). The answers that follow are the responsibility of PHYSICS REVIEW and Edexcel accepts no responsibility whatsoever for their accuracy or the method of working used.
