A lot of the physics you hear about in the media is ‘big’ physics like the discovery of the Higgs boson in 2012, or the 2015 New Horizons mission to Pluto. I am as interested as anyone in these projects and the science behind them, but I also derive a lot of pleasure from the little bits of physics around us every day that often go unnoticed.
This article arose out of an unusual interest that I have in electricity pylons, as you will see if you visit my blog (see References and further reading). You might now be expecting to read about some aspect of electricity, but instead I’d like to talk about a problem caused by wind blowing over the cables strung between the pylons.
