If icebergs capsize

A top-heavy iceberg is likely to capsize, transferring energy to the surrounding water and producing a tsunami. The energy is comparable to that released by a nuclear bomb

The terms in bold link to topics in the AQA, Edexcel, OCR, WJEC and CCEA A-level specifications, as well as the IB, Pre-U and SQA exam specifications.

Mathematical modelling of a capsizing iceberg uses Archimedes’ principle and ideas about pressure and density. Calculations of gravitational potential energy changes, and the application of energy conservation, lead to an estimate of the energy transferred during capsize.
