Earth and wind

Solution and notes

In circuit work, the electrical potential of the Earth is defined as zero. Using Coulomb’s law and the law of universal gravitation, it can be argued that Earth has no net electric charge. Historical documents show that the idea of a spherical Earth was established earlier than is often supposed. The first law of thermodynamics explains temperature changes associated with winds in mountainous regions

Earth (31 Across), two (19 Across), rest (8 Across), nF (18 Across) and mT (20 Across)

Figure 1 shows a battery with a potential difference of 10V between its terminals, but this says nothing about the absolute potential at either terminal. B could be at a potential of 5V, in which case A would be at 15V (a difference of 15 − 5 = 10). B could be at −3 V, in which case A would be at +7 V, etc.
