Analysing a strobe photograph

All the current A-level physics specifications require aspects of experimental work to be assessed in written examinations. The question discussed here is about experimental data collection and analysis

Stroboscopic photography has been used for many years to record the movement of projectiles. In recent years, many apps for hand-held devices have become available that allow multiple exposures of moving objects. This question is based on a photograph taken with a stroboscope; the same principle can be used with multiple images captured on handheld devices.

The question on page 27 is from the Sample Assessment Materials for OCR Physics B (Advancing Physics H557), Paper 3 (Practical skills in physics). It includes a consideration of experimental uncertainty and has a 6-mark ‘level of response’ section (see below). The question is reproduced by kind permission of Cambridge Assessment (OCR). The answers that follow are the responsibility of PHYSICS REVIEW and have neither been provided nor approved by OCR.
