Multiple-choice questions on electrostatics

A degree of skill, outside of simple subject knowledge and calculational ability, can help students succeed in the multiple-choice format of examinations. This skill is not hard to acquire with effective practice, and can help you to score well, even if you are not sure of all the physics

In the AQA A specification multiple-choice questions are used in Unit 4, which covers fields, circular motion and SHM. This Exam talkback discusses some questions on electrostatics that illustrate the sorts of skill involved in answering them successfully. These questions are taken from the January 2010, June 2003, June 3013 and January 2004 AQA Unit 4 papers, and are reproduced by kind permission of AQA. The commentary that follows has neither been provided nor approved by AQA.

Answer C was a popular choice. How can we untangle this and see if it is correct? Students who are used to calculating the answers to questions given all the necessary quantities might look at this sort of question and wonder what to do. After all, there is no value for Q, or d for that matter. There seems to be a blur of answers all looking rather similar to each other, with no obvious way to start.
