In 1899 Hertha Marks Ayrton became the first woman to present a paper at the Institute of Electrical Engineers. She had studied mathematics at Cambridge and later went on to study electricity at Finsbury Park Technical College.

In the late nineteenth century electric arc lamps, first invented by Humphry Dav y, were a common source of lighting in public places. The light was produced when a spark passed between two carbon electrodes. Sometimes the lamps f lickered and hissed.
