Creating a temperature sensor

How do you design, make and calibrate a temperature sensor, and ensure that its performance characteristics are related to practical applications?

A potential divider circuit incorporating a thermistor can be used as a temperature sensor. The performance of a measuring instrument (e.g. a sensor) can be described in terms of its range, sensitivity and resolution. For some instruments, the response time is also important.
