Often in science fiction the science takes second place to the plot, even to the point of throwing science out of the window (e.g. Star Wars). Occasionally, however, the science is integral to the stor y, as is the case with Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar. The premise for the film was developed by astrophysicist Kip Thorne (a distinguished professor at California Institute of Technology in the USA) and producer Lynda Obst who wanted to explore ‘the most exotic events in the universe suddenly becoming accessible to humans’.
The film is set in the near future. Humanity is struggling to survive on an increasingly hostile Earth. Food is in short supply as a virulent disease jumps from one crop species to another.
