Modern fuel-efficient cars boast of 400–500-mile ranges on a single tank, while electric cars (apart from the Tesla Model S) struggle to travel much more than 100 miles. Energy calculations help explain why the range of electric vehicles is so much smaller than that of fuel-powered ones
