In March 2014 many of the ‘big guns’ in physics turned out to hear a small team of physicists announce the results of the Background Imaging of Cosmic Extragalactic Polarisation (BICEP) experiment. These data give an amazing glimpse into the earliest moments of the universe’s existence and provide confirmation of one of the most ambitious physical theories of modern time — cosmic inflation
