Absorption of neutrons by thorium can generate the isotope uranium-233, which can then be made to undergo fission in a controlled nuclear chain reaction. The reaction cross-section for fission induced by thermal neutrons is greater for U-233 than for other uranium isotopes, and the reactions are less likely to produce hazardous radioactive waste.
