When tackling questions that require an extended written response, it is important to think through your answer before starting to write. Sometimes it is easier if you list some bullet points in a part of the exam paper that is not normally written on, before starting your answer. Challenge your first thoughts about the physics of the situation and make sure you answer the question that is being asked, not one you may have seen in a practice paper.
The question discussed here is taken from the January 2013 Edexcel Physics Unit 5 paper, Physics from creation to collapse, which covers thermal energy, nuclear decay, oscillations, astrophysics and cosmolog y. It is reproduced by kind permission of Pearson Education Ltd (Edexcel). The answers that follow are the responsibility of PHYSICS REVIEW and Edexcel accepts no responsibility whatsoever for the accuracy or method of working in the answers given.
