How hard?

A hard material is one that is not easily scratched or indented. This article explains one test commonly used to measure hardness and shows how this relates to other measurements such as yield strength

Researcher performing a microhardness test. The probe within the apparatus applies a known pressure to the surface of a material at several points. The surface is then scanned and measurements of the indents taken
Andrew Brookes, National Physical Laboratory/SPL

The terms in bold link to topics in the AQA, Edexcel, OCR, WJEC and CCEA A-level specifications, as well as the IB, Pre-U and SQA exam specifications.

Units of hardness are linked to calculations of stress. Hardness is also related to yield strength.
