Classifying galaxies

As we look out into space with a telescope, we see many billions of galaxies. The Hubble Space Telescope Deep Field image (1) reveals an estimated 10 000 galaxies, and the most distant lie over 10 billion light years from the solar system (2).

American astronomer Edwin Hubble (1889–1953) was the first to confirm the existence of galaxies other than our own when he calculated the distance to the Andromeda galaxy (3) and found that it lay far beyond the most distant stars.
