You might be wondering if the title is correct — should it read ‘The letter e’? Bearing in mind that this is a mathematical article, I can assure you that the title is correct. It refers to the irrational number e, which has the value 2.71828 (approximately).

In a previous article (PHYSICS REVIEW Vol. 21, No. 4, pp. 26–28) I wrote about the use of logarithmic graphs and, particularly, log-log graphs. I promised to cover the use of log-linear graphs at a later date and, since the main use of log-linear graphs in A-level physics is to solve problems involving exponential relationships, and since these relationships generally involve this rather special number e, it makes sense to start by explaining a little bit about what it actually is.
