Heat can be transferred by conduction, convection or radiation. The rate of heat transfer is usually greatest with conduction, which is amply demonstrated in the Leidenfrost effect. Eliminating conduction enables the human body to survive brief contact with extreme heat or cold, but it is best not to try it yourself.
