LONDON 2012
During the 2012 Olympics, the Olympic Stadium (1) will hold 80 000 people, but when the games are finished the top, temporary, tier can be removed, leaving just 25 000 seats.
The stadium is an elliptical shape, and the roof covers about two thirds of the seats. Computer modelling of the wind around the structure showed that this roof would reduce the wind speed in the stadium, which is important because crosswinds or headwinds will stop athletes reaching their peak performance and Olympic records only stand if the tailwind is less than 2ms–1.
