This issue’s Mathskit is a little unusual, in that it isn’t going to be full of equations and examples. Instead, since this is the time of year when many people are busy with coursework, and coursework is very much about making measurements, I thought I would try to clarify some of the terminology students often experience difficulty with.
Three words that often cause confusion are accuracy, precision and reliability. If we then add error, uncertainty and sensitivity, perhaps it isn’t too surprising that students often get these words mixed up. By the time I get to the end of this article I hope you will have a clearer understanding of what these words mean and why they are important.
