The coolest use of lasers?

RIA NOVOSTI/SPL

The terms in bold link to topics in the AQA, Edexcel, OCR, WJEC and CCEA A-level specifications, as well as the IB, Pre-U and Highers/Advanced Highers exam specifications.

Laser light can be used to cool the molecules of a gas to almost absolute zero. To understand how this works we need to know about the relationships between temperature and molecular kinetic energy, and between radiation frequency, wavelength, energy and momentum, and then apply momentum conservation to molecules and photons.
